papers

As a music major, I have to produce a lot of papers on music theory and history. Here are several of them:

Raga Puriya and its related ragas
Final paper for Indian Classical Music, which I took Fall 2001 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London (SOAS). This paper concerns the Puriya group of ragas, made up of Ragas Puriya, Puriya-Kalyan, Puriya-Dhanasri, and Yaman.

Cecil Taylor, free jazz, and modern Western music

Final paper for Music of the 20th Century, taken Spring 2001. The paper discusses the evolution of free jazz, specifically focusing on the contributions of pianist/composer Cecil Taylor. It covers the influence of modern Western art music (e.g. twelve-tone, serialism, etc) in Taylor's music, Taylor's adaptation of these techniques to fit jazz aesthetics, and the controversy surrounding Taylor at the time.

From the Baroque to Classical Era: 1650-1800

Final paper for Music of the 18th Century, taken Spring 2000. The paper is a general overview of Western music from 1650-1800.
