development in yangshuo

there's an article in today's new york times about infrastructure development in china, and it's got some lovely pictures of workers building a highway against a backdrop of those big, pointy karsts (limestone mountains).

the correspondent reports the article from Yangshuo, near Guilin, and it makes me wistful for the last time i was in yangshuo (photos) and those krazy karsts. apparently Yangshuo is "one of the country's most popular tourist destinations," though it definitely felt more like a sleepy backpacker's relaxation spot a couple years ago. i suppose the next time i visit i can drive there on the new highway... sigh...

front page news!

hey, neat, a photo of my jazz combo's concert last night made the front page of the Brown Daily Herald today! we're even above the fold. check out the photo at the herald's site. or click there on the right.

now i'm famous. obviously this means i have to walk around on campus amongst the undergrads (i never do that) and see if anyone recognizes me.

also, if anyone asks, i only play "jazzy tunes" from now on.

adoz reunion!

last weekend marked the return of the greatest ska band to ever come out of ithaca, Agent Double O Zero. our reunion came about as somewhat of a lark: kennyb, a friend and one of our biggest fans, was having a gala birthday party, and would we like to be the surprise? before i knew it, people were buying plane tickets, plans were being made, and the reunion was set.

kennyb's party, at galapagos art space in williamsburg, was the awesomest party, ever. the pictures don't quite capture the craziness, which included an open bar, a knife-throwing act, burlesque dancers, the hungry march band, and agent double o zero, of course. plus, we actually pulled off the surprise, which was awesome.

we finished off the night (sat, feb 26) with a show at the underscore on the upper east side, the only place we could book a saturday-night show on such short notice. it was like a cornell reunion inside, and we rocked, again, proving that we hadn't forgotten all the songs, and that adoz is still here to stay. awesome.

(i put up some pictures of both reunion shows.)
