sounds like they finally plugged enough racks together to rank #1:
NYTimes: IBM sets record in computing
IBM claims fastest supercomputer title--for now
"world's fastest" is a nice phrase; maybe this will make it easier to explain what my job was the last couple of years. my cocktail-party line used to be "we're building the fastest computer in the world!" in an evil-scientist voice; now i can use the past tense! sweet. this isn't really that impressive yet, though -- when they get 64 racks together next year, it should scale another order of magnitude faster. (cross your fingers.)
on the grad school front, i go to grad school! i got paid again today. to do what? to read papers and go to classes and stuff! amazing! time for more homework.
finally got my four most recent disposable cameras developed (man, i need a digital camera) and i have for you some lovely canoeing on the hudson photos. they're super-awesome.
providence is ok. i sometimes forget it's a port city, but while leaving campus tonight one could really smell the salt air. that's nice.
school seems to be progressing well enough. i still can't get over being a student again: i sit in classrooms (sometimes in those little half-desk chair things) and have homework due tomorrow, even. who would've known!
just finished a week of orientation at school. providence still feels small, but i'll get used to it. can't blog now, though, as i'm in seattle at bumbershoot for labo(u)r day weekend, and it is rockin'.
