there's an article in today's new york times about infrastructure development in china, and it's got some lovely pictures of workers building a highway against a backdrop of those big, pointy karsts (limestone mountains).
the correspondent reports the article from Yangshuo, near Guilin, and it makes me wistful for the last time i was in yangshuo (photos) and those krazy karsts. apparently Yangshuo is "one of the country's most popular tourist destinations," though it definitely felt more like a sleepy backpacker's relaxation spot a couple years ago. i suppose the next time i visit i can drive there on the new highway... sigh...
Posted by cce at March 23, 2005 09:50 PM | TrackBackDid I tell you that when I was in Xi'an they were building a highway on top of the old city walls? (Xi'an is practically the only city in China with a large portion of it's city wall still intact.) Sigh...also, did you know they're building the craziest railroad tracks in the world leading to Lhasa? This country's on the fast tracks to sprawl...blech!
