arrived in bangkok

well, i'm finally in bangkok, after what seems like an interminable day yesterday of flying -- 15 hours from newark to hong kong direct (over the arctic polar cap!) and then a short hop here. unlike new york, it's damn hot here, just when i'd almost forgot what humidity felt like.

apparently i'd blabbed too much about my travel plans to all my friends, so with the tsunami disaster i've received a surprising amount of "i heard you're going to thailand -- are you ok?" emails and phone calls before and since arriving. so, to clear that up, i am most definitely okay.

i also got a lot of "you're still going?!" remarks before i left -- though i could never ascertain exactly what concern the questioners had. perhaps was it a] that all of thailand, from phuket to chiang mai, was underwater; b] due to the national mourning everyone would be inside, crying, making traveling unenjoyable (and leaving us knee-deep in a flood of tears); or c] that an earthquake might strike again, carrying us off to sea? however, apart from what's in the news, the only signs of the tsunami noticable from the ground here are collection boxes for disaster relief and signs appealing for RH-negative blood.

of course, our previous travel plans to the andaman coast are off, and we're looking to go to ko pha-ngan in a couple weeks, after heading to chiang mai on monday.

so things here are lovely. happy new year!
