With the release of the latest TOP500 supercomputer list comes more press coverage of the project I work on (#8 on the list is down the hall). BBC gives good details about the list itself, IBM taking half of it, etc; NYTimes has an interesting article on BG/L's future as a product (perhaps I can get an employee discount?); InformationWeek on low-power designs.
All this worrying about and jockeying over TOP500 rankings reminds me of another expensive sport -- Formula One racing -- at times, but I suppose it does give us something to get excited about. Not that I'd mind being #1.
update: Just noticed this at the bottom of the NYTimes BG/L article:
The commercial market for Blue Gene/L designs will require much smaller machines. I.B.M. says it has had serious discussions with two dozen companies, which it will not name. Google is quite interested, according to one industry executive, but has price reservations.Really, Google? Odd ...
about discounts for your project..
mom (the ibmer) told me a story the other day about one of her coworkers that invented the chip that goes in...i think some ford vehicle, and one day when he had to replace it, the mechanic wanted to charge him 500 for it. he got really pissed off and went home and attempted to install it himself with the many extra chips he had in the house, but failed.
came back to the mechanic and threw a few chips at him shouting and whining.
but still paid 500.
tee hee

Posted by: manning at June 22, 2004 04:18 PMThe Vietnam War didnot stop in Vietnam in 1975 but it still going on.
"America War Crime Museum" and the whole truth about the Vietnam War: The Vietnam War wasn't about rice paddies. It was about truth freedom it about liberate from an EVIL goverment. Too bad The American did not finish what they started.
The America Gov. did not want the communist have control over Asia so the they sent the troops into Vietnam. All of the sea transportation meet at the Vietnam's sea. At first the America wanted to send troop into Vietnam. Our Ngo Dinh Diem against this. So the US ok to his underman killed him (After this point South Vietnam never in peace again). To make this short, After the Vietnam War the communist kill thousands of South Vietnam Army. Many people force to live their house with just the only clothes on them. All of the South Army officer got send to jail in jungle for years they called it politic school they want to reform human's brain many die, got crazy, killed themselves. 2 million people left Vietnam on boat after 1975 and more than half of this number made their destination to the bottom of the Pacific, got robed and raped by pirate (find the book "Journey to the Pacific" Or the VHR "Journey to Freedoom" to know about the truth of Vietnamese people who was hunger for Freedoom and willing to give up everything even their live for it.
Today, Vietnamese doesn't know the truth about freedoom. Some of the News writer got send to prison for 7 years just because he translate the meaning of Human Rights, Freedoom. For the last 29 years American trying to forget the Vietnam pain, wound cut. Until now President Bush listed Vietnam into the top list of country of doesn't have Human, Religion Rights.
I would give up my live if I have a chance to explain to all of the Vietnamese people that still live in my dearest country know what's the truth about freedoom.
We have gave tears for the refugees did not make to Freedoom but heaven.
We have give tears to the American who died of 911. Even I'm not an American citizen.
And I'm still give tears to the Vietnamese people wish for their freedom for a better tomorrow.
