the broken toe weekend

So Friday night I was running around my parents' house in NJ trying to find stuff to bring back to my new apartment. I'd already laid out a guitar and amp at the top of the stairs earlier. Running up the stairs for more items to pack, I didn't bother to turn the light on -- this is the house I grew up in, after all -- and, CRACK! My foot ran right into the amp.

I thought I'd just stubbed my toe until a couple of hours later, when I was still limpin' and gimpin' around the house. Taxicab Dan was over, about to leave for Mexico, and suggested it might be broken when I took off my sock and noticed the middle toe pointing 20 degrees or so to the left. After an IM consultation with doctor-in-training Mike I put some ice on it and went to bed early, hoping it would all go away in the morning.

Came back to Inwood limpin' and gimpin' a bit less and feeling not so bad. After consulting WebMD on broken toes, I picked up some tape 'n' Tylenol from CVS and tried "buddy taping" the broken toe to a neighbor, which made it feel a little more stable and easier to walk.

The tape gave me the confidence to limp out and see Charlotte Sometimes, a great indie movie (by a Hapa director) that had Roger Ebert raving and was nominated for lots of awards. The movie was really very good and wasn't at all a "stereotypical Asian-American movie," whatever that means. They never made a big deal about the characters being Asian, like they do in mainstream movies -- y'know, the martial artist, the computer hacker, the UN translator, etc. It was just a well-written movie with a story that didn't explain everything from the outset, but let the viewer figure it out along the way. The main character hardly spoke, which the director admitted in Q&A aftewards was "risky, but only if you're making a movie that you expect a lot of people to watch." Afterwards I got to hobnob with NYC hapa powerbrokers from Swirl and EurasianNation.

Unfortunately my broke li'l toe cut the evening short -- while walking from my seat up the incline of the theater walkway, I felt something in my foot strain that perhaps shouldn't have, and I went from feeling-fine to gimpin' and limpin' all over again. I passed on dancing the night away with the hapas, director, and cast and grabbed a cab home, finally unwrapping my toe after I'd limped my way safely back to my apartment. Eugh ... purple, red, black, blue, I'd never seen that many colors on my foot before.

More ice, more sleep. Sunday morning found me worse-off than Saturday morning, and since my general rule of thumb is that things are supposed to get better, not worse, with time, I began to worry about finding a doctor. I also began to realize that if I'd had health insurance like I keep planning to get, I'd probably already have been at a hospital taking an X-ray by then. But I didn't, and I still don't, and so after much searching, I decided the NY Foot Clinic in Harlem would probably be my best bet for low-cost foot care.

This morning I limped my sorry self down to the subway and over to the clinic. This is getting to be a pretty long blog entry for such a pointless topic, so I'll finish quickly: an X-ray showed that I there was indeed a fracture, so nice podiatrists wrapped my toe up snugly so I won't hurt myself again (as I did in the theater). The bill: $90 for the visit, and $60 for the X-ray. Probably less than the deductible on a health plan. Thus: who needs insurance? Oh wait, ME.

one thing you omitted in your entry, chris, was that the doctor said you aren't to wash your toe for five days. mmm. and who said that american cheese was bland?

Hi

I stumbled upon your sight while looking for info. on "broken toes."
Well, my story pararllels yours almost to the "T" for toes?
I stubbed my toe(Left-little) on labor day 2003. I am also without insurance so I "self-diagnosed" my fracture. I immediately used ice for the first 48 hours and kept it elavated to remove the swelling. After two weeks it started to feel "better" so I started to use physical therapy, again "self-diagnosed"; never did I consider the "immobilization period". Or "buddy taping" etc. So today, 27 days later I noticed a light purple color which seemed to reappear to my toe. This caused some concern so I desided to soak it in Epsom salts. I did this for about an hour and also massaged it with my fingers so as to get some blood circulation back into the toe.
Sincerely, broken little toe
PS. How is your toe now and do you have any words of advice for my healing process? Should I go to a foot clinic too?

Posted by: broken little toe at September 27, 2003 04:58 PM

I can't believe that running into the vacuum that I didn't put up resulted in a broken toe.
I went to a 24 hour clinic and the took an Xray.
Yes, the doctor said you have a broken toe.I was the pinkie to be exact. That was it. I wasn't given any taping or shoe to walk in. I was miserable at work since walking and standing are required. I went back ask for some kind a shoe and received a prescription for a soft cast. It took them 5 days to get the right size for me. It really helps and I wish that I had it sooner.
But it has been 21/2 weeks and it still hurts if I try to stand on it without the shoe. Everyone states that nothing can be done for a broken toe but I disagree. Demand the taping or the soft cast immediately. I think we prolong the healing process by tying to get by without it. So any ideas on how to heal faster.

ok, well i broke my baby toe on Jan. 1st (New Year's Day) of 2003 three. I cried like a baby for ever, and it being sunday, and having no insurance, just sat around and felt like crap. I finally got it x-rayed the next day, and was offered nothing in terms of tape, etc.

Well lo and behold, I re-broke my baby toe tonight, Feb 1st, 2004 (Super Bowl Sunday). Same deal, stubbed the lil bitch on furniture.

I think i should pencil in March 1st, 2005, just to keep the tradition alive...in the mean time, I have found some vicoden to keep me happy.

Found this site while researching. Broke little toe on 2/8 and got same info as everyone else-with the exception that the doctor said I could technically run a marathon if I wanted to, just no jumping around to displace the bone again. My husband had been the one to reset it, doctor said good job. But this thing hurrrrts like a mother still. Would the person w/ the Vicodan be willing to share? :)

I don't know if I should see a foot doctor or not. It's been 3 weeks now and my little toe still hurts like crazy. The bruising has gone away but it swells up after I exercise. I can't stand to wear a tennis shoe because I feel like my toe is all crammed in there. My injury happened on vacation, another tourist stepped on my pinky toe with his big basketball shoes, while I had nothing protecting my toes (sandals). I have been walking funny to try and not apply preasure to my little toe, but now I get pain in arch from walking funny. Is it too late to see a doctor? Should I just keep them buddy taped together?

Posted by: Steph at April 1, 2004 11:05 PM

I broke the pinky toe when I fell - got an x-ray, hurt like heck - they gave me a hard sole shoe so the toe can't move around - even on a toe a fracture is a fracture which fully takes (usually) 6-8 weeks but I will probably push that up just cause......
For Steph - if it bothers you still might as well go get it checked out - the wood shoe they gave me feels 100x times better than any of the shoes I own - esp. cause you don't want to mess up your arch or the rest of your foot from altering your walk

I broke my little toe hitting the edge of a dresser while rushing to get something in my bedroom. This is the second time, different toe, on the same foot. Must learn to slow down! Saw the doctor, got the x-ray and he "buddy" taped it. Also, he put a soft shoe that fastens with Velcro on my foot. It's very comfortable and my toe doesn't hurt. He said, however, that it could take up to 12 weeks to heal. Seems like a long time to me. I go back today to get it rechecked so maybe it's healing faster than he thought. (I'm anxious to get back to my every day walking exercise I've been doing over a year now)

I limped around for 8 days and tried so hard to forget my own pain. My husband was in hospital and I was too busy thinking of his pain to consider myself. Finally went to Dr. and he ordered an x-ray 4 days ago...little toe broken. I'd hit my toe on coffee table getting out of chair. Dr. told me on phone to tape the toe to the other two. It's impossible to stay off your feet for 12 weeks. Considering how the foot has 26 bones...it's no wonder it takes so long to heal. When we walk we exert tremendous pressure on the foot. The entire top of my foot is still swollen, tho it's looking better. It's sure not funny..is it?

I hurt my little toe during a fire breakout in my house and little did I know that my little toe had a fracture when I took the x-ray. I had gone for chinese traditional medication where they put medicines on the toes and bandaged it up.

I would like your opinion if I should see a orthopadic surgeon regarding my case and what treatment would be given to me.

Thank you.

I too broke my right little toe however I wasn't racing around, just walking through the bedroom after work one night. It is an end to end fracture (oblique) of the long bone of the little toe, slightly jammed and displaced. I worked over the weekend with my shoe laced tight for support (I am a nurse so was on my feet for hours on end) and finally went to the doc on Monday. He "buddy taped" it which did make it feel better and won't let me go back to work for 10 days. Nothing like sitting around with your foot up for 10 days,UGH! Still hurts a week after the injury but is getting better. Nothing about not washing it for 5 days as I saw in one posting. It will take 6-8 weeks to heal but friends say it will hurt for at least 3 months. Boy do I watch where my foot is at all times now! I hit it on an antique chair, wonder how many little toes it has "notched on it's belt"? ha ha ha. Could always be worse, a neighbor dropped a steel beam on his toe a couple of years ago and broke all ten toes at once. We should not complain too much over one I guess although the pain is certainly intense!! Best of luck to all "Sisters and Brothers of the Broken Toe Club"

Well, just need a little advice. I stubbed my toe on the end of the couch yesterday (middle toe, left foot). It immediately swelled up and started bruising. I could not move it at all and as the day went on the pain worsened. I was barely able to walk on it by days end. Today, the swellen has went down a little and it feels some what better. I don't have insurance and don't want to make a trip to the doctor if not necessary. I don't know if it is broken or just bruised, but fits several symptoms for fractured toe( tingling, numbing, swelling, bruising etc..). Can someone give me some advice please....

I am also a member of the "Broken Toe Club." Last Wednesday evening, I banged my little toe on a footstool. I limped around for a few days, and then tonight I banged the very same, still sore, little toe on the recliner leg. It hurt soooooo bad that I actually cried for an hour until the throbbibng subsided a bit. I took a Tylenol 3 tablet and am still wondering what to do next. Should I got to the ER and have it x=rayed -- i do have insurance, or should I "buddy tape" it to the other toe? Right now, the pain is quite intense and I am worried about actually rebreaking a non-healed broken toe, lol. Any suggestions?

Just fractured my baby toe left side on June 21, 2004, trying to race my cats to the room lol, hit my hardwood bedroom door, ouch laid down immediately and put it up. Walked around in thongs after that, never went to the doctor, walking around better in runners now, tying loosely on sore toe side. Went through the purple, blue, red thing that was scary. spread through left toe to 2 other toes. Still soak in ice or kewl water. Good luck to all in their healing toe time....take it easy...slow down Carol

i broke my little toe (right foot) 2 weeks ago by banging it on the door frame. i went to the doctor the next morning and sure enough it was broken (i went to an urgent care clinic b/c my doc was closed). the doctor pulled and "set" my toe and told me to wear that velcro shoe for two weeks. well i did that and now i still cant wear a normal shoe and if i dont wear the special shoe i am in excrusiating pain. also the whole bottom front of my foot is numb and my toe is still swelled up should i see my docotor about this?

Hello Broken Toe Club. I broke my little (left) toe a week ago Wed. night trying not to step on my two kittens who were trying to get under my feet as I left the room. Why do kittens like doing that? I lost my balance and fell into the kitchen, my foot hitting the corner of the baseboard and knocking a piece out of it. It hurt like crazy, but my husband told me there was nothing I could do but buddy tape it to the next toe. That hurt worse, so I took the tape off when he wasn't looking. After a 3-day weekend with only slippers on, it was feeling a little better. Then I had to go to work again and put shoes on. After walking around the office for one day, my foot swelled up again. After reading about all of your "little" accidents, I guess it's just going to take time. I was going to go to the doctor, but don't think I will now. If I had been wearing my fuzzy slippers this would not have happened. To all you out there with toe problems, especially if you've done this before, get fuzzy or fleecy slippers. Even when you hit your toes, they're cushioned!! It really helped reading about everyone else. Thanks for being there.

Ouch-right foot, little toe, daughter's playpen. When I went to the X-ray they taped my broken toe sideways for a side view. They wrapped it with a splint underneath and told me I could see an orthopedic if I desired. I can't believe they don't offer pain med for something as painful as this! Vacation to start in 2 days.

I was barefoot, getting in the front passenger seat of a car, when I was around 11 years old. Don't ask me how (clutzy kid, I guess), but I accidentally placed my LEFT foot such that the big toe was not in the car, and shut the door on it. ...ouch... YES it hurt (when I finally realized what I had done...just felt pressure until I looked down and saw it). Anyhow, could not even put a sheet on it when I slept for the next little while. So here it is, 30 years later, and it's starting to bug me 10-15 minutes in to a walk. Pain goes away, but maybe it just gets numb...? Made an appointment with a podiatrist for next week to see what can be done...rebreak it? Has anyone had that done with a big toe? And how long does it take to heal? I already don't wear pointy shoes...I hope I don't end up wearing sandals for life... Any comments about personal experience with this type of thing?

i stubbed/smashed my little toe right foot on the leg of a rocking chair today and man does it hurt, it is purple and blue all around the toe, and onm the foot,i buddy taped it but it still hurts especially when my kids bump it or touch it, i wore my sandal tonight because of lack of choice. Sounds like baby toes and furniture are a deadly mix.

Egads! So many broken toes! And so many similar stories. Three weeks ago I went to sit on the carpet to have a go on the PS2 and caught the end of my little toe on the rug as I sat down -- snap. Next thing I know I'm looking down at my foot and my little toe is at a right angle to my foot! Horrors! Bizarre thing was that I didn't feel anything. After I freaked out, I ran to Google, learned about "buddy taping", put it back in place, taped it up, iced it for about 30 minutes and went to bed. Next morning I woke up and it looked fine--no pain, no swelling--but I knew damned well it was very broken. Kept it taped then went out partying two days later, walked 2.5km back to the bus stop from a pub in cowboy boots, went home. Got up the next day, felt fine again, taped it up, went surfing for three hours, no problems. Was feeling so good that when the wind came up I grabbed all my kitesufing gear, ran back to the beach and had an epic 2.5hr kitesurfing session. Unfortunately, when I got back to the beach I noticed the tape had come off and my toe was dangling, apparently internally unattached at the break and swollen. Guess the footstraps on the kiteboard weren't kind to it... Anyway, for the first time, hurt like hell and couldn't stand on it, so limped home, iced it again, taped it and have kept it out of action for the past 10 days now. After three days swelling had gone down again and pain has gone. Hard thing to judge is now that the pain has gone, how long do ya leave the dang thing out of action before you know it's healed and ready to go again???

On July 6th I broke my left pinkie toe after running into my recliner not once, but twice. Quite clumsy! My sisters who are in the medical field told me there is nothing that can be done for a broken toe except to buddy tape them together which I did. I decided to call my doctor the next day because my foot had become very swollen. My daughter said my foot looked like Shrek's foot. I left a message for my doctor to call. My doctor's office never returned my call, so two more days passed and I called and was eventually seen and x-rayed and was told that it was broken by my doctors medical assistant. I was told to take it easy over the weekend and to apply ice. It has been about a week now and my toe and foot still hurt like crazy. My doctor did not suggest a special shoe or anything. I have been wearing flip flops to work because nothing else fits. I am also walking funny because it hurts when I put pressure on it. I am also a diabetic and I have just found out through researching on the web that I should have been referred to a podiatrist. I feel that I was not referred because these HMO's don't want to spend money! I am going to see if I can get a referral to a podiatrist.....Still in pain. I just hope it does not last for 12 weeks as some of the others with broken toes mentioned.

Wow, i never realised there were so many clumsy people out there. I thought it was just me. I broke my baby toe this week whilst running to get the phone, stubbed it on the door frame.Went to hospital, no x-ray given but confirmed it was broken and buddy taped the toe. It is still painful although I am driving again now. Any tips on fast-healing most welcome please.

OK...thanks to you all I don't feel as bad as i did...I taught Martial Arts for several years and now work on a horse ranch.....So you would think a horse or a block would have done my toe in....Nope someone move my futon in the living room during a party. Came through the room in the dark to check the locks and CRACK ..ok more like a SNAP. i shrugged it off until 10 minutes later i curled my toes. It hurt all the way up my leg, so far up my fanny hurt. well it has been about 24 hours and I STILL hurt. I buddy taped immediately but i too have no insurance so here i sit my foot in a bucket of ice water, wondering how i am getting a boot on said foot for work tomorrow....Did i mention the clumsy horses who will probably step on me again and again! Anyone reading this if you pray say a small prayer for a lonely broken toe cowgirl. LOL Hugs!

Heya, Robbo here again -- something worth looking into -- there is a fair amount of documented research indicating that small electric currents applied across the break in a bone can actually accelerate the healing process. Many physios have little battery operated boxes with wires and electrodes that they hire out to patients for this. Haven't actually tried it myself and don't know how widespread the use of this technique is but have seen them a couple of times here in Oz. Might be worthwhile to try and track one down and give it a go...

My heart goes out to all of you for a speedy recovery as I, too, klutzed out today and now fear the dreaded broken toe. I tripped over some garbage cans and stubbed my toe on the concrete step - and of course I was wearing flip-flops. The last time I broke my toe, I smashed it on some landscaping edging and it literally was cracked sideways and I had to snap it back into place. The doctor made me wear this hideous "bowling shoe" with velcro and I'm very athletic and could not work out on it for nearly 6 weeks. This time, the toe is not rainbow colors, but like many of you - I have no health insurance. I'm footing the bill tomorrow for an extra (pun not intended) because ignoring the problem only makes it worse - I learned my lesson last time.

This broken toe/lack of insurance thing is really an epidemic. Maybe when our feet are all better we can kick some reform into gear!!!!

Good luck to all of you!

I was trying to kick a bouncy ball outside(barefoot - stupid, I know) but my foot eye co-ordination isn't very good and my big toe slammed into the ground onto the patio. It's only been 2 days since then but it still really hurts and I can't walk properly on it. I've no idea what I've done, but it's bruised and swollen. How long do these injuries take to heal?? Can somebody help, please!

i posted on july 5 about my broken toe and how my foot was numb well i finally went to the doctor and the culprit was the special shoe the urgent care doctor told me to wear. turns out it pinched a nerve in my foot and i was advised to stop wearing it imediatly to prevent permanate nerve damage. so if you have that special shoe and your toes start to feel numb or like they are asleep stop wearing the shoe belive me it helps it will take a couple of days but it goes away. also im happy to report no further problems with my toe except im parinoid im gonna hit it again =)

Hello! I happened to come across this site on my quest to find something to ease the pain of my 2 not broken but hurting toes and legs. I was in Canada for my sisters bacholrette party this weekend and being drunk I feel over another drunk and heard the loudest pooping sound ever and it was instant pain. My sisters called me a wimp and said I just had a blister from the shoes that night. I was in so much pain. We got up that morning and they wanted to go to the falls one more time so after walking about 5 miles to the falls and then 5 miles back I was about ready to die. We finally got home after 5 hours cramped in the car. Well then getting home and explaining the broken toe to my husband he took me to the hospital and I had an x-ray and they said that it was not broken but maybe had a hair-line fracture. They typed it up and then gave me some pain medicine but that was it. My legs are killing me now. I have a wedding in 13 days and I don't see anyway to get my shoe on for that so who knows what I am gonna do. Well I was just wondering why my legs (BOTH)are killing me? It is probably from all the walking. Well I hope this doesn't last much longer. Good Luck to all of you!

any toe fracture that doesn't result in misalignment of the bones that make up your toes requires no treatment. all you can hope for is that it heals quickly on its own and that over-the-counter pain meds alleviate the pain of the fracture.

you can help your cause by keeping weight off your toe as much as possible. ice and elevating the foot above your heart when you can might help a little, too. Probably not that much, though. for those who have considerable pain from the fracture, some suggest that immobilization with a sift cast will help. frankly, i think that's overkill and wouldn't make much difference.

people who have such bad fracture of the toe that result in misalignment of the toe require surgery to realign the bones and fix them into position. most likely, you'll be able to tell if this has happened to you because your toe will look extremely messed up and not straight when it once was.

if you are concerned about the status of the bones in your toe after some trauma to the foot, the safest thing is always to report to an urgent care center and get an x-ray just to be sure. in most cases, i think you'd be able to look at your toe, and if it's still straight, not even bother going, because they'll just tell you to forget it because there's nothing you can do.

even though the fracture may be tiny, and not require any specific treatment, it will still hurt, and may do so for quite some time. it will take some time to heal. so, give it some time and cross your fingers and hope for a little luck.

take care all of you kids. take it from me. i know things about medicine and i've broken several toes and fingers and ankles. so, suck it up. be a man. show 'em you ain't no weenie, and kick 'em in the face with your broken toe.

I broke my little toe on my right foot after falling over my grandchilds tricycle in the garage. And yes, no shoes. Wouldn't you think I'd learn after breaking toes before? I've never broke a little toe before though and can't believe how much worse it seems to heal from this. It's been 5 1/2 weeks now and am doing much better but still have the toe taped and can only wear certain shoes. I really miss my exercise walking at the gym and have no idea when I can really get back to it without the worry of pain. How long has it taken the rest of you to get back to the gym and walk at a full pace?

oh owie...this is the worst! I dropped a wooden set of blinds on my big toe whilst yanking out the extra table leaves to use for a big party for my boyfriend.

I writhed on the floor for a bit but realized I had to get up and get the dinner ready. I got by with some champagne self medication but the agony kicked in around midnight and yesterday I called my doc for some Tylenol 3 and advice.
Purple, dark blue and red puffiness...she said I will probably lose the toenail unless I have it drained.

Oh the horror!
I think I'm into a bubble bath and more champagne
(in the glass, not in the bath)
Good luck to all...

Hi Broken Toe Club, I fell down the step (yes just one!) and tripped and now I think I have two broken toes, the pinkie and his pal next to him. They are blue, purple, red, grey and some other colors I don't there's a name for. I put cotton between them and then taped three toes together with scotch tape (it's all I had). I also used ice and elevated it. I had to take the dog out so I wore these weird stretchy shoes I got a long time ago. I hope it heals fast, I am a "Fall person" (the season not the crashing to the floor) and I want to get out and enjoy the Fall. Plus I feel like a moron. A moron with broken toes. Sigh. If anything exciting happens I'll write again.

Im adding my experience of the broken toe to this list. Im not sure if its actually broken but it is swollen and I have been in paid for almost 12 hours. Im keeping a cold compress on it. Which feels good for a while. I have no insurance and it will cost me $100 just for me to see a Dr. And I am losing a days pay. So I hope this lil toe of mine will be 50% better tommorrow. Im gonna try to avoid walking on it. We'll see what happens. But I will use the tape method. I just have to find it. Christie

Hello, Broken toe club. My story starts with my wife wanting to get us and the kids back in shape. So we took up Tae Kwon Do. We were doing some kicking with upright pad with a hard plastic bottom. Well I missed the pad and kicked the hard plastic bottom, OUCH! I thought I could finish but the pain took over. This was on a Thursday by Friday I could not walk and the weekend was bad to. So comes Monday and I called the foot doctor and had an Xray and I think I beat you guys and gals on this, I broke my little toe in 2 places and the one next to the little soldier was broken too.
That was a bad Day..
PS: 2nd week I'm walking alittle better...with alittle limp.

last night i was putting away the laundry and as i was walking i banged my pinkie toe on my fire safe..it hurt so bad that when i yelled no sound came out. so here i am at work now wondering what to do cuz im in so much pain that its radiating up into my shin area, not sure if its broken, fractured or what. i hate hospitals (especially since im closest to Bellevue here in NY) so i think i may just wait till i get back to Queens and hit up LIJ Hospital..hey im lookin for any reason to be home from work hee hee hee lol

Last night I woke up because nature was calling and on the way to the bathroom I hit my right little toe on the corner of the wall. WOW did that hurt!!! It is either fractured or in a state of shock... It took me about an hour to go back to sleep. Not only because of the pain but because I was thinking about walking around the Covered Bridge Festival day after tomorrow. Something I look forward to every year and we walk about 2-4 hours enjoying the food, crafts and beautiful Autumn foliage. I will try to make a deal with my toe that if she just gets me through the festival I will pamper her for weeks to come.

Found this site looking for info on broken toes.I was bringing a load of laundry upstairs and hit my little toe on the base of the exercise bike that I have in my basement. When I took my sock off to check my foot, my toe was sticking out at a right angle to the other toes on my left foot. My husband wanted to "fix it" by trying to reposition it, but it hurt so bad that I told him to just take me to the doctor. I couldn't stop laughing because, even though it was very painful, it seemed so silly that my baby toe could require medical attention. An x-ray showed that it was fractured. The doctor taped two toes together and told me to rest for 10days-almost impossible when you have 3 children-and to put ice on it and take Advil. She said it could take 6 to 8 weeks to heal. It has been 5 days since the accident happened and today I was finally able to put my foot into my sneaker and tie the lace. It still hurts and I have been using a cane for support. I have to go for another xray in a week.

I broke my left pinkie toe Christmas Eve 2003
almost 11 months ago and it still hurts when
I walk or stand for a long time.

I slammed my right baby toe into a baseboard while running to get the phone. I was not able to walk on it the first day. The second day I woke up and the top of my foot and the toe were purple and swollen. This is day number three and the toe is still really swollen and hurts. I am assuming it is fractured or broken. I have insurance but don't want to take the time to go have it checked out. I guess I will just keep wearing my flip flops to work until it feels better. Very annoying!

Hello. This is just too much, lol!
I too broke my little toe yesterday morning ,banging it on the bathroom doorframe. then a few minutes later, I stumbled while getting up from the floor, and heard a loud crack, and omg, hurt worse than the door frame! so, anyway, it's black and blue, and hurts ALOT, but is not crooked or anything, so I am just trying to find out where i can get a shoe to wear until it heals. I cannot wear my sneakers! youch!

I'm a ballroom dancer and an avid walker/runner. I was in Thailand with a group of 200 skydivers from all over the world. I was not jumping. I didn't want to break any bones! So, I stayed on the ground and went swimming...big mistake! I was STEPPING, mind you, into a very slick swimming pool, dare-devil that I am...and swoosh, slipped and caught my fall with the back side of my right foot on the corner of the step and said, "Ow!" My second toe was bent down, touching the bottom of my foot. I lifted it back in place, but it wouldn't stay put. Went to ER and found out I had fractured THREE toes! Boy, was I razzed! Of the 200 skydivers, I was the only injury! Everyone said I should have been with them doing something safe like skydiving! Anyway, it has been 5 weeks and I still have the splint and buddy tapping. I have yet to get a real shoe on, but I can see a big improvement. I have discovered I can now do aerobics and stepping in place type exercises to try and recoop some of the softness I've acquired in my 5 weeks of doing nothing but limping! But, still can't put full weight on the whole foot. It's been a real drag!! Sympathy and best wishes to toes everywhere!

I was in such great spirits. I finally quit my crappy job! So I was hanging out at my friend Jeff's place, doing a little celebration dance after watching The Big Chill (in the middle of the afternoon no less, how luxurious). Dance, dance, dance, then WHACK. I killed my poor little pinky on my left foot by inadvertantly kicking the cement wall. I'm pretty sure it's broken, but finding a doctor (esp. one who has an x-ray) is muy muy dificil in this city. not quite sure if a doc will be all that helpful. Arg. Amazing how a little tiny toe can hurt so much.

Well, I am now a proud member of the broken toe club. I am really surprised that I have not broken one before now, being as how I stub my toes daily. However, I am going to throw some oddity into the mix of broken toes, as to I broke the toe NEXT to the pinky toe (left foot). I think my brain decided it was time for me to break a toe, cause I saw the vaccuum cleaner, and had PLENTY of time to walk around it, but either brain wanted broken toe or brain thought I could walk through the vaccuum cleaner. I distinctly remember speeding up for the main event. Well, hurt like hell, more than all the stubbed toes. Woke up this morning and was all swollen and purple. Called best friend who has her own broken bones club and she told me same advice everyone else got from the doctor. Decided to see how long it will take to heal and WA LAH, I am a new member. Oh, I think us with no insurance ought to break away from the main group and for a new sect. Well good luck to your healing process and hello to all the members that come after me.

I HIT MY RT. TOE AND FOOT ON AN OAK CHAIR IN THE KITCHEN, BAREFOOTED, SO NEEDLESS TO SAY HURT REALLY BAD, SO DECIDED TO GO TO E.R. AFTER WAITING A LONG TIME, THEY FINALLY X-RAYED, BABY TOE BROKEN, SO THEY JUST RECOMMENDED PAIN PILLS AND GAVE ME SHOE TO WEAR, I WONDER HOW COME THEY DIDN'T TAPE IT TO OTHER TOE? DOES ANYBODY ON THIS SITE KNOW IF IT IS REALLY NECESSARY..VERY UPSET, I CAN'T JUST LAY IN BED AND ICE IT AND ELAVATE ALL THE TIME EITHER.

Well place me in the klutz category as well. I just don't know how to walk properly. First time i broke my little right toe i walked into the couch broke it bad was black across the top of my toes all the way to my big toe and that was 9 years ago. Well the second time i broke it was 3 weeks ago walked into the wheel on the bed frame. Well it didnt hurt as much as the first time and only was bruised two toes up. But man i hit it again this morning and man did that ever hurt oh well not enough to make me cry but enough to make me limp all over again, and just when it was starting to feel normal and not hurt when i put my running shoes on. I use an eliptical runner alot and stationary bike and walk alot but this toe breaking thing slows it down to a snail pace and after i am done my toe just throbs. It will heal eventually. Hang in there everyone these things eventually heal even though it takes time. :)

pretty sure i broke my left 4th toe in the middle of march....tripped over a footstool while turning a corner in my house....there was a huge bruise for a while, and i was limping for a few weeks. now it still hurts sometimes....my doctor wrote me a note to get out of gym class, hee hee :), but it's embarrassing to have to tell everyone that i broke my toe from being clumsy and tripping. oh well, hopefully it can get me out of gym for a few more weeks.

Well..sign me up! 1 week ago I apparently forgot how to walk, kitty cat was in the doorway and I caught my baby toe on the door jam....... OOOOUCH!!!, talk about pain....my toe was heading towards the neighbors house,..brought me to my knees and I cried like a baby.... Went to ER room, did x-ray, yep, it was really broken. Thankfully the ER doctor had done the exact same toe in January........ so she did the buddy tape thing with the gauze and told me it took her 4-6 weeks to be able to wear a shoe without pain and longer if you want to wear heels ....... keep it on ice for the week and try to stay off of it........
Still is very colorful and swollen, hard to walk.
PLEASE can someone tell me how to reduce the swelling..... I work in outside sales and have to wear appropiate shoes....
Good Luck to all of you/us out there. This is a great site!
Thank you

As I sit here reading all of this, with my two- week-old break on my pinkie toe, I have really laughed. I can relate! My husband stepped on my bare toe and crunched the bone. He actually felt the bone pop! It turned all kinds colors within a few hours and hurt like heck. A week after this, I cut the bottom of the toe next to it so I can't buddy tape them. A couple of days ago, I jammed it on a rock while working in my yard and think I broke it even worse. A hammock between two trees is starting to sound like a safe place to me! The toe has swollen really big again, but after reading all of these entries I guess that is normal. I had decided to go to the doctor, but I am going to save the expense and just be patient...and careful when I walk. Good luck to all of you "broken toe friends" out there. I don't feel so alone anymore more.

I have size 15 shoes and this type of crap has happened to me all of my life but for some reason this one feels different. It hurts and hurts and hurts. I'm gonna buddy tape 'em up like I've been reading on these blogs and wait for the best. I can wear shoes and all of that good stuff, but man does it hurt! Looks like I won't be joggin' for a while!!!!!

I am a two time toe breaker champion. The first time was when I was in the Fifth grade. I don't remeber how long it took to heal but I do remember that it was quite painful. I have also torn my achilles tendon(I think subconsciously I enjoy hurting the area around my foot). This time I hurt my left pinky toe. I think it's broken. It's been four days and it's starting to feel better and I can even get into a shoe. BTW all of these injuries occur on my left foot/leg Still painful in a shoe. Hope it gets better soon. Try not to join the broken toe club. It's no fun.

Posted by: Gerald T at June 15, 2005 03:05 AM

Another one to join the club...well heres my story. It started at indoor soccer last night. Heres me trying to go for a big kick to the ball and then WHAM! I hit an oponents foot instead and crunch my toes. Going off the court i take my shoe off and notice my toes are starting to go numb and cold. Still wanting to play, i chuck my shoes back on and go and play till the end of the game, which wa probably a bad idea as afterwards my foot is in alot of pain. Well as today would have it, i called in at the doctor and got an X-ray which revealed to broken (fractured) toes, namely my big toe and the one next to it. Feeling pretty devastated as i'm going to bali next week for a surfing trip but now i can't surf for 6 weeks!!!

Posted by: Alessio at June 16, 2005 01:30 AM

Hey fellow sufferers, hurts like hell doesn't it.
I've broken my baby toe and the one next to it falling down the stairs. Its been a week now and the pains got no better, just got to suck it up I suppose. I really hope that the 12 weeks prediction on here is not true, thats a bit too much sucking up for me.

Well, I too, "officially" joined the broken toe club last Sunday (4 days ago). I stepped off of the side of my friend's above ground pool, into the water and voila! one broken pinky toe on the right foot. I doubt I will ever hear the end of it from my husband. We are avid walkers (4-6 miles a day) and this is definitely slowing me up. I can't stop walking however as I don't want to listen to my personal drill sargent's (husband) cracks about it! I have it taped and have even cut the side out of my sneakers to help some with walking. Hope this heals fast! LOL reading the rest of these blogs though. It does make one feel better! ;))

Posted by: Renee at June 29, 2005 03:46 PM

I broke my toe by stubbing it on a pool deck chair and like you I have no health insurance so I self diagnosed. I also haven't seen so many different colors. I'm currently on day three and hoping that it heals fast because I can't swim with the kids I watch and I'm a long distance runner :( Everyone keeps asking if I broke it playing soccer and I have to admit to running into a chair. I'm praying that God heals it.

Oh woe is me - my toe story is left foot, pinkie's neighbor... jammed into a fitness machine running to deliver a towel to my daughter. Iced it, kept it elevated, tried to stay immobile the next day. A few days gone by and still very tender and ugly looking but appearing to stabilize. Am going to try the buddy-taping approach. A tight bandaid helped a bit. Couldn't even stomach a visit to the clinic day 1 because I knew the doctor's diagnosis would be pain on top of pain. I do have insurance... but alas, I'm on vacation in Canada. Could probably claim the clinic visit but the paperwork - now that is pain! Most painful is my hobby is fencing - very foot intense. Definitely watching my step going forward. Good luck to all other members of a the Broken Toe Club - a most undesirable Club to be a member of!

I can't believe how many people have broken their baby toe--and now I have too, last night. All your comments have made me feel better and even laugh because it is such an absurd little problem in the greater scheme of things in this life. I am fortunate in that I am a teacher on summer holidays so I can go barefoot and ice and elevate it all I want. I dread to think if this would have happened during the school year when I rarely sit down. My baby toe is just swollen and my foot is bruised but have no, thank god, right-angled dangling going on.

Oh my god a site about broken toes.
I have found it by mistake but I sure am happy I have.
I think I have broken my big toe, ouch!
I got into a crazy rage and kicked my ex boyfriends car, it seemed like a good idea at the time. As soon as I calmed down the pain started and it was then that I realised it had been a stupid thing to do considering I was wearing flip flops.
I can walk although it is very painfull, but I have very limited movement in the toe, its very stiff and if I force it to bend it is agonising.
I need urgent advice on how to treat this without going to the doc's.
PLEASE HELP ME.

I broke my big toe on my right foot after getting pissed off and kicking a chair. Not a good idea.
I iced it down right away and took an Advil. In a couple days it got real purple. it still hurts but am massaging it to help it heal. Not sure if it is broke though but feels like it. If it doesn't come out of it in a couple weeks may see a doctor and pay the bucks, not sure if they can do anything anyway.

Well, I think my story tops most of the ways everyone on this list "stupidly" broke their toes. I was sweeping the floor today, bent down to pick up the dustpan and four of my toes went one way and the baby toe went the other! I heard a loud popping and saw it dangling and it wouldn't go back into place. I also have no health insurance, but I went to a podiatrist who took x-rays and told me it was both fractured and dislocated. He luckily numbed it for me and then was able to put it back in place, and told me if i hadn't immediately elevated it and iced, it probably would have swollen up too badly to re-align and I would have needed immediate surgery. He finally buddy taped it and gave me a soft shoe. for anyone instantly googling after they think they broke a toe- definitely immediately ice and elevate and keep ice on it all day (15 min. on, 5 min. off) Anyway, even if you don't have health insurance I suggest going to a podiatrist if the toe is out of alignment because that definitely needs to be take care of right away. Good luck!

Well, I'm the newest to the broken toe club here. Seems like nearly everyone has broken their little toe. We're remodeling our house. My husband had a piece of 1/2" plywood leaning against the wall. I was walking quickly, as usual, and smacked my little toe right into it. It hurt, bad, but I didn't think much of it til a while later. I tried to manually move the toe and it crunched. The two toes next to it wouldn't move either. I also noticed it was purple. Went to Urgent Care. Xrays proved the obvious. The after care was pretty crappy. Dr. asked me how I hurt my toe and then told me it was broken, wrote a prescription for the all-mighty fix all: 800 motrin. The nurse buddy taped it, told me to ice it, told me elevate, gave me a boot, then, gave me "the boot!" I forgot to use ice, but have been taking the motrin, but have no idea how long I'm suppose to stay off the darn thing. Oh, when I asked the nurse about the boot, she said to stop wearing it when the pain went away!

I can't believe how many people out there have done almost the exact same thing. I too am without insurance. I was bathing my dog and she jumped out of the bathtub and took off down the hall I went running after her and got my pinky toe caught on the bathroom door. OUCH! I thought I had just hit it really hard but when the pain was still as intense 4 hours later and my foot was turning blue I figured it was a little more than that. I don't have insurance ... seems like an epidemic on here ... so I didn't go to the doctor. I heard the buddy tapping was a good idea but I couldn't stand that very long. I can't put full weight on my foot so I have to walk on the inside on my foot. It's very hard to wear a shoe. Its day 5 and still very swollen around the little toe, but the bruising has faded quite a bit. The thing that is really bothering me is that my pinky toe seems to be facing a bit outward instead of straight up as my other toe does, and I can't tell if it's just the swelling. Also I cannot move the arch area of my foot. For instance if I tried to pull my toes up towards my body it doesn't happen. My foot actually wants to curl forward instead. Very strange sensation to not have control like that. Does anyone else have this problem??? I am wondering if I should spend the money on the doctor or keep waiting it out.

Hi from another new member of the broken toe club. This has been interesting reading. I was going into work (thank goodness for workman's comp), and the door caught on my sandled foot. Somehow I nearly ripped off the big (great) toenail and fractured the toe. Bled alot, but being me, I wrapped it a bunch - took tylenol and went to my meeting. It hurt like hell and then stopped - think I was in shock. But that night the nail kept bleeding and it throbbed like crazy. (Thank goodness I still had Tylenol/codeine from my kid's wisdom teeth extraction.) The next day podiatrist told me toenail had to come off (almost was anyway) and have to wear supportive shoe for at least 4 weeks. It was a mess - and I am devout coward. I think having a baby was more fun!
Well now I am trying to deal - missing toenail is healing, toe throbbed for days. I am slow and clunky and can't get anything done, and my toes are cold in that shoe (with nights in the 50's) since anything pressing on the top (nail) still hurts. I hate being a klutz!!! Yuck!

Sort of nice (camaraderie-wise) that I am not the only one with a suspected broken toe ;-) Never realized it was this common. I stubbed my middle toe against the edge of the bathroom door, broad daylight, utter clumsiness. Never thought it could be a fracture so went about the days work and even put a hot water bottle later. Big mistake, it swelled up bad, till I read I was supposed to ice pack it and elevate. My insurance is high deductible so wanted to avoid the doctor if at all possible, and googled the topic, thats how I came up with this site. Anyway, after 24 hrs, my toe has not turned purple or blue yet like some of you wrote, it hurts only when I try to stand normally on it, but seems about 10-15 degrees out of line (although I never paid attention to whether it was always like that). It feels a lot better with tight socks on (equivalent in effect to "buddy taping" I am guessing). When I said it might be a toe fracture, but my girl friend said I was acting like a hypochondriac. Anyway, I think I am going to let it take its course for the time being. Probably will pull out of leading an 8 mile hike I am supposed to on Sunday though. Will keep all posted. Glad if anyone else could share feedback on similar experience etc. T&R. Sean.

I blame my left baby toe on my husband. He left the alarm clock going for 5mins (he was still in bed one foot from the clock). I ran from the kitchen to the bedroom to turn it off and my baby toe caught the corner of the wall. I cut the end of it (large avulsion) and used a knuckle bandage to support it and keep it from bleeding. I wore my flip-flops into work, but I'm in the Navy and I had to change into my uniform and these slim black pumps. OUCH!!! I had to put my loafers on and it still hurts! I know that I have insurance (military of course), but I'm a corpsman and I work at a hospital. You end up looking like an idiot if you go into sick call for a broken pinkie toe! But I think I will. I have a chief that is so gun-ho about running everyday and I can barely walk, so I think I'll go in tomorrow morning just to get a note excusing me from "gym". Its important to see the doctor on things like this, because if the fracture traveled and other bones are broken as well, you can cause permenant damage. I hope my story helps as much reading everyone elses!

hello, i guess I am the newest member of the broken toe club. I came across this site by trying to find help. This morning I was getting my coat out of the closet and I had my little tailgating grill on the top shelf, it fell onto my foot ouch!! It has broken my 2nd toe on my right foot. It sucks b/c I can't walk on either side of my foot. I'd much rather it be my pinky toe. The thing is I'm about to leave for a cruise in 2 weeks. I am a clumpsy person. This will be the 3rd injury I have suffered before going on vacation.

Well I guess I'm a member of this club now too! It's amazing how much pain can come from a baby toe. I stubbed it last night, like I have many times before only this time it was at right angles to my foot. The pain was so bad I was pale and sweating, throwing up.

I went to the emergency room. Turns out it was dislocated and broken. They took x-rays, froze it and put it back in place, buddy-taped it and gave me an appointment to see an orthopaedic surgeon in 4 days time. They told me to walk with a cane until then. This morning it is black and blue, and still really sore.

Pretty embarrassing, you feel like a whiner. I laughed when I found this site! Lucky for me it's the left foot so at least I can drive.

I broke my toe trying to kick my 12 year old daughter off the bed as we were wrestling. I screamed at the top of my lungs for about 10 minutes all the while my daughter is laughing at me. I cried after that and stayed in bed for the next two days, I am 8 months prego and can't take a lot of medication, It was difficult for me to get up and use the bathroom so my husband got out our comouter chair and wheels me around the house. Last night I sat on the floor after my shower and laughed while crying trying to put on my pants as my belly is huge and my toe hurts like hell...

I broke my 4th and 5th toes about a year and 1/2 ago. However, I can still not wear regular shoes... When I wear shoes, if I can actually get my foot in them, my little toe swells up liek crazy and then forget wearing anything but Uggs or flip flops for at least a week. I live in NYC and walk alot and need to dress professional for work.. What can I do to stop this?
