the future

The big question I guess for this week has been: when am I getting out of Hong Kong? I'm not quite sure yet myself. I didn't get into the graduate programs I was looking at for this fall, so I need to start doing job-seeking and figuring out how I can sustain myself for the rest of the year. I will probably be in New York again this summer, as I've been asked back and it gives me time to make money and plan my next move.

In order to keep eating, I probably need to get a job. I started thinking about all the places where I'd be happy living, and the list turned out to be pretty short:

  • NYC - get a phatty pad in Brooklyn like everyone else I know from Cornell
  • Bay Area - I could probably land a Silicon Valley job, and it seems nice there
  • Boston - nice li'l city. Plus "Taiwan Cafe" in Boston's Chinatown is the best restaurant ever.
  • Beijing/Taipei - I could probably scrounge up some scholarship money and teach English and study Mandarin in a real Mandarin-speaking place. Plus I really LOVE watching Taiwan MTV and I've heard so many good things about arts/culture in Taiwan. Mainland seems a little scarier because I don't like people who smoke cigarettes constantly and spit on the floor.
  • Somewhere else foreign - y'know, because living abroad and pretending to be an expat is pretty fun.
Admittedly, this list is mostly just places I've lived before. The Midwest is a giant mystery to me: I've never been further inland than Pittsburgh, and even that was a bit scary. But what it probably comes down to is this: I'm old now (okay, not really), and I don't like to or find it to hard to make new friends -- I miss my old ones and would rather just chill with people I already know. That's why I'll probably head back East (from the, uhm, Far East) this summer to New York.

I vote Bay Area. Except live in San Francisco, because Silicon Valley rather sucks for living.

afaik, they're still letting Hong Kong planes land here.

PS: ARE YOU DEAD YET?

Ummm...I'm thinking the midwest maybe would be a good place for you to settle down. It's full of wide open spaces where you can sneeze and cough and do whatever else people do with their mucous secretions to your heart's content. Then maybe after say a year or two, you could consider living again in a densely populated area. Just kidding. Hope to see you around this summer (but not in too close a proximity). :-)

yeah, i think that the bay area is pretty phatty. setting up & getting an apartment/job seems harder though because it's so far away (interviews, scouting out). plus i'd need a car to commute (right?). but it's pretty and you seem to be doing well...

The apartment thing is a pain in the arse, but you're welcome to stay at our place until you find one (if you want).

No car necessary, as long as you work somewere close to Caltrain. My friend at Apple lives in SF and has no car whatsoever, but he bikes a lot.
